All at Fairey Industrial Ceramics Limited would like to take this opportunity to wish our customers, distributors, agents, and friends around the world all the very best for 2007!
In previous years, we have sent paper cards to communicate our best wishes. Last year we decided to send our greetings to you electronically in this newsletter and to donate the money that we would have spent on cards and postage to a worthwhile charity. This decision received such a positive reaction from you all that we have decided to do the same again this year.

Our charity of choice for 2006 is WaterAid, an organisation very close to our hearts. They undertake projects in 17 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region, bringing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education to those that need it the most. Even the simplest of measures, which we take for granted, can have a very profound impact on the lives of people in poor countries where easily preventable water-borne disease is commonplace.
You can find more information on WaterAid (Charity registration number 288701) and make donations to this worthwhile cause at www.wateraid.org.

Fairey’s Industrial Porous Products division is delighted to have received a significant contract from Broadbent Laundry Systems Ltd for Star-Sep™ Ceramic Membranes. Broadbent’s Laundry Water Recycling (LWR) Plant utilises Fairey’s Star-Sep™ Ceramic Crossflow Microfiltration Membranes as key components to recover up to 88% of discharged laundry water effluent.
Following extensive trials at a major UK laundry, Huddersfield based laundry specialists Broadbent Laundry Systems Ltd has been successful in securing contracts for a further 3 systems, resulting in significant orders for Fairey’s Star-Sep™ Ceramic Membranes.
The raw laundry effluent is filtered through the array of ceramic membranes in crossflow mode, before being passed through a reverse osmosis system to achieve a level of cleanliness which makes it suitable for rinsing. The whole system is monitored and controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and visualisation system which records trend and historical data on recovery rates and various other aspects of the process.
Up to 300 of Fairey’s Star-Sep™ Ceramic Membranes are installed into a stainless steel module, forming a key part of the LWR process. For systems requiring larger flow rates, further modules can be added. Broadbent’s current range of LWR systems can be designed to process effluent flow rates in the range of 15 to 66 m3/hr.
The benefits of the LWR systems are many. The significant reduction in cost of water and energy (associated with heat recovery), not to mention the reduction in salt usage, means that a payback time of 1 -3 years is achievable in most cases.
Both Fairey and Broadbent are excited by this development, which could benefit laundry operations in the UK and abroad.
